Africa Project
The Africa Project was started by Franklin & Marshall Head Coach Dan Wagner before Chris' passing. Coach Wagner wanted to take his team on a trip during which they could help underprivileged soccer players. However, when the Campbell family asked mourners to donate to the project, the project was able to expand its vision to include a field, clubhouse, and yearlong intern.
Next, the CTCTen Foundation stepped in to help with fundraising. The foundation used many channels, including last year's clinic, to raise the requisite money used for construction of the field shown in the gallery. The beautiful turf field is located in Khayetlisha, South Africa, and is the first of its kind in that area. Last spring, the F&M soccer team created a connection with the locals by opening the site. In addition, Chris' teammate Ryan McGonigle is in the midst of his yearlong internship in Khayelitsha. A new intern will take over in August.
The purpose of the Africa Project is to create an infrastructure from which educational programs can operate. The combination of the field, clubhouse, and trained intern allow local South African NGO's to do their job without having to worry about financially supporting their base. It is our job to continually fund the infrastructure that gives disadvantaged African children the chance to learn about lifestyle choices through soccer. Some of these lifestyle choices are HIV/AIDS prevention, self-confidence, leadership, and interracial relationships. The most emphasis is placed on teaching kids about HIV/AIDS prevention.
All in all, the project has enjoyed a lot of success since its inception, but still needs our help. The next construction project is a clubhouse/classroom that will stand near the field in Khayelitsha and serve as an educational base. While funding is underway, more is needed to help put this element of the project over the edge. Please help Coach Wagner, the Campbells, and the Africa Project save lives in South Africa!
